Apple Tree Seedling Pot Size

How do you know how big of a pot to give an apple tree sapling that you germinate?

Plant Guides Response:

Always use the smallest pot that will comfortably accommodate the root system of any seedling. Then repot the plant into larger containers as it grows.

Go up 1 size at a time. For instance: if you begin with a 4 inch pot, when the roots fill this you will transfer the plant into a 6 inch pot. Then an 8 inch pot and so on.

It might seem to save work to place the seedling into an 8 inch pot to begin with but the danger here is that the soil will remain wet for too long and kill the seedling.
