Arabian Jasmine
Sambac Jasmine

Arabian jasmine or sambac jasmine is an easy to grow plant that produces sweetly fragrant flowers. Jasminum sambac is the national plant of Philippines, and the flower is extensively used in Indian weddings. It is also used to make jasmine oil, tea, leis and perfumes.

It is the jasmine most often used to give commercial products a jasmine scent.

This vining shrub grows to a height of 5 feet and will spread far and wide if you do not prune it. With regular pruning it will maintain a bushy shape and flower more heavily, giving you more of that wonderful scent. The leaves and stems are dark green in color, the leaves are almost oval in shape and are 3-6 inches long.

Arabian Jasmine flowers all season until stopped by frost. The flower blooms in the evening and is white in color during the day but towards night, it turns to a pale pink color. Clusters of 1-inch long flowers are a treat for both eyes and nose.

The plant prefers sun to part shade. This is not a picky plant; it will grow in almost any environment. Jasmine plants prefer well drained but moist compost. This one is cold hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as 8 degrees F.

Sambac jasmine is one of the best jasmines to grow as a houseplant as it requires no annual exposure to cold. Feed it regularly while it is actively growing.

Propagate Jasminum sambac by rooting cuttings of nearly mature wood.

Take advantage of the plant's tendency to spread by looking underneath it for new shoots coming up from the soil.

Dig these up (they should have their own roots) and pot them.

Grow them in shade and keep them moist until they are big and strong enough to plant out.
