Advantages of Biological Pest Control

Biological natural pest control is suitable for use in organic gardening. When you use a beneficial bug to reduce the population of harmful insects in your yard, you don't have to worry about exposing yourself, your family or your pets to toxic chemicals.

And unlike some chemical bug sprays, biological insect pest control has no harmful residual effect.

Biological pest controls are target specific. They only kill the bugs you want to be rid of. Most chemicals are broad spectrum. In the process of knocking off your bad bugs, they can harm or kill your beneficial garden insects.

Problems Beneficial Nematodes Solve

  • They can be used to exterminate root knot soil nematodes.

  • There are flea control nematodes which will kill fleas on your lawn without harming your dog.

  • Nematodes and slug control go hand in hand. There is a type of nematode parasite that will rid your garden of these slimy freeloaders.

  • The fire ant nematode combats these fierce, stinging ants that plague southern landscapes.
  • Each of these dirty garden jobs is done by a different nematode species. Be sure to purchase the right nematode treatment for your specific problem.

    Using Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Entomopathogenic nematodes will usually arrive at your door embedded in a dry sponge. Soak the sponge in cool tap water for a few minutes. Squeeze it a few times to release the microscopic worms into the water.

Do this the day you plan apply the nematode water. They won't remain viable for long once they are in solution. They need to get down into the soil right away.

You can use a hose end sprayer to apply the good garden bugs. Use the largest orifice so that the nematodes can flow freely through it.

Use all the solution at once. Water it into the soil after applying it but do not drench the soil.

Only apply entomopathogenic nematodes when outdoor temperatures are above 55 degrees F.
