Echinacea dosage information. What dosage of echinacea to use to receive the greatest health benefits of echinacea supplements. Using echinacea for children.
Echinacea overdose symptoms and contraindications.
The dosage of echinacea you should take depends on your body weight. The dosage recommendations you see here are based on a 150 lb. body weight.
If you weigh 300 lbs., double these dosages. If you weigh 100 lbs., reduce them by a third.
Dosage Info for Echinacea Supplements
The following doses taken 3 times daily are generally considered to be safe but I want you to be cautious. If you've never taken echinacea herbs before, begin with a single dose on the first two days.
You can have an allergic reaction to any new herbal supplement.
People don't always react after the first exposure. This is why you need to take the lowest possible dose for 2 days before proceeding with the normal dosages.
Echinacea Allergic Reaction
Most people take echinacea supplements without experiencing any serious side effects. But a small percentage of us are allergic to it. The reaction can be mild or so severe as to be life threatening. These are the symptoms to watch for:
Itching of the mouth or eyes
Tingling or swelling of the lips and tongue
Any swelling on the head or neck
Shortness of breath or wheezing
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. Do not wait.
Never take an herbal preparation you have not tried before without having some Benadryl on hand. Other antihistamines may work as well, but I can only recommend Benadryl as that is the only one I have used.
I am allergic to echinacea. After my second exposure, I had an anaphylatic reaction. I took 2 Benadryl tablets. The Benadryl caused my symptoms to subside quickly enough to save me a trip to the ER.
Take the following dosages up to 3 times per day for up to 10 days:
Echinacea tea -- 1 cup
Echinacea powder -- 300 mg.
Echinacea liquid tincture -- 50 drops
Echinacea liquid extract (fresh) -- 15-20 drops
If you are using echinacea topically, apply the cream or ointment as needed.
While you may certainly take less than is listed here, these are the dosages most frequently used in echinacea research. Echinacea herbs have demonstrated effectiveness at these dosages. A smaller echinacea dosage may not be effective.
If you take too much echinacea, you may experience nausea and/or vomiting.
An allergic reaction to echinacea is the more serious problem.
*If you are taking drugs which are designed to suppress your immune system, don't take echinacea. Echinacea's immune stimulating properties will probably counteract your medications.
Dosage of Echinacea for Children
Calculate the dosage according to the child's weight. A 75 lb. child would take half the dosage listed above. A 50 lb. child would take one third.Research suggests that echinacea may not be effective in children below 12 years of age.
If, like me, you are sensitive to pharmaceuticals and tend to have adverse reactions to over-the-counter or prescription drugs, this comprehensive guide to using herbal alternatives may be just what you need to manage your health naturally.
I was diagnosed with asthma as a teenager. After several years of struggling with asthma medications and not really getting any better, I decided I could not take it anymore.
The drugs made me feel sleepy all the time.
I threw them away, determined to learn to treat my asthma naturally.
Drugs were much cheaper in those days. I was an impulsive teenage girl. I don't think you should throw your meds away until after you speak with your doctor and find a natural remedy that works!
For the last 30some years, I have been managing my asthma naturally.
I sprinkle ground black pepper on my food daily (it cuts mucus) and avoid my triggers. I also use thyme and cloves often in cooking as these 2 herbal anti-spasmodics relieve the bronchial spasms which happen during an asthma attack.
I have not had a full-blown attack in years!
Over the years, I have discovered many other safe, cheap alternatives to pharmaceuticals. They work if you know how to use them correctly.
That is the true value of
Herbs the Natural Alternative.
It tells you which herb to use to treat your ailment and how to use it.
Best of all, it is written with gardeners in mind. If you need help deciding which herbs to fill your medicinal garden with, download this book.
You won't be disappointed.
