'Golden Showers' is to the summer border what the daffodil is the the spring garden: bright, early, and floriferous.

The semi-double blooms of this lightly fragrant climbing rose begin as beautifully shaped buds. They open bright yellow, mellow to amber and fade to cream as they age. The flower shape also changes as the bloom matures.

When young, the flowers resemble those of a high-centered Hybrid Tea rose. Later in life, they become open cups. The various colors and shapes are liable to appear on this rose bush all at once.

The flowers first appear in late spring or early summer and continue, with few and brief pauses, until frost. Having just 30 petals, the blooms open quickly. They make up for this by dropping cleanly from the plant when they are done.

Hybridized by Lammerts and introduced in 1956, 'Golden Showers' grows to a height of 10 feet. Its dark green, glossy foliage is resistant to mildew and rust but will occasionally get a touch of black spot.

Train its nearly thornless, upright canes on a pillar or climbing rose trellis. It can also easily be pruned into a tall shrub rose. In fact, it will typically spend its first 2 years of life as a tall rose bush before climbing to its full stature.

This is the best selling yellow climbing rose in the U.S. Perhaps its rain resistant 3-4 inch blooms are the reason for this 1957 AARS selection's long term popularity. Or maybe its protracted season of bloom has been seducing rose lovers since the 1950s.

One of the more cold hardy climbing roses, 'Golden Showers' is recommended for USDA planting zones 3b-10b.
