Tomatoes growing in containers will dry out faster than tomatoes growing in the ground so use a potting mix which contains water crystals.
Tomato plants are heavy feeders so mix a couple of handfuls of organic compost, composted manure or worm castings into each bucket to provide a nutritional boost.
Add in some tomato fertilizer if the potting mix you are using does not already contain it.
Last, mix in 2 tablespoons of horticultural lime for each gallon of soil. The calcium in the lime prevents blossom end rot on tomatoes.
To activate the water crystals in the mix, soak the container well after planting the tomato. Then water it again in 24 hours. After that, you can just water when the top 2 inches of soil feels dry to the touch.
Container Tomato Varieties
Determinate tomatoes are the best types to use in container tomato gardening. They are also sometimes called bush tomatoes.
They grow to a certain size (which will be listed on the seed packet or plant label) and stop, unlike indeterminate tomatoes which continue to grow until stopped by frost.
Celebrity and Patio tomatoes are 2 of the best tasting tomatoes.
Sophie's Choice is one of the best heirloom tomatoes to plant in a pot. Golden Nugget tomatoes are also a better variety to use when growing tomatoes in a container.
Don't be afraid to use your favorite variety as a container tomato even if it happens to be indeterminate. Just plant it in a bucket and stake it up.
