Haleakala mountain is the most visited attraction in East Maui. Situated between Kula and Hana, the volcano is inside Haleakala National Park. To get there, take Route 37 to 377 to 378 (the Haleakala highway or Crater Road) from Kahului. To drive from Kahului to Haleakala's summit takes about 1.5 hours.

In Hawaiian, Haleakala means house of the sun. At 10,023 feet, Haleakala crater is the highest point on Maui island. The early Hawaiians believed that this is where the sun lived. Probably because they saw it rise there every morning and set there every evening.

Sunrise at Haleakala is still, today, a special event for many visitors.

It is estimated that volcano Haleakala has erupted at least 10 times in the past 1,000 years. The most recent eruption occurred around 1790.

It is currently dormant.

As the picture above illustrates, Mauna Kea can be viewed from Haleakala's rim.

If you look out to the sea from Haleakala on Maui, you can see the tiny, crescent-shaped islet of Molokini which was formed by an underwater eruption. Molokini is actually part of Maui but the land connecting them is under water. Only about 7% of Mount Haleakala is above sea level.

Lanai, to the West, is also connected to Maui (about 300 feet below sea level) but you may not be able to see it clearly as the West Maui volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, may be obstructing your view.

Hawaiian legend tells us that Mount Haleakala Maui was once the home of Pele, the fire goddess. After being chased from her home on Kauali by the goddess of the sea, she fled first to Ohau then to Haleakala Maui. But don't expect to see Pele during your visit, she has relocated to Kilauea on the Big Island.

Cheap Haleakala Maui activities include watching the sun rise and stargazing. In fact, the Haleakala observatory, run by the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, is one of the most important observing sites in the world.

Haleakala's observatories are located above 1/3 of the earth's atmosphere where the air is dry, clear and exceptionally still. This makes Haleakala Hawaii a very desirable place to locate a telescope. Consequently, experts travel from all over the globe to participate in research conducted here.

Hiking Haleakala is also a very popular activity among Maui's tourists as is biking down Haleakala.

There are also van tours offered or you could go on a Haleakala ATV adventure. If you know how to ride, you might like to tour Haleakala on horseback.

Before you set out, stop by a visitor center and pick up a Haleakala map. While you are wandering around the mountain, keep an eye open for Haleakala silversword, a plant which only grows at high elevations on Mt Haleakala. This may be your only chance to view this endangered species.
