Heathcote Botanical Gardens

Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Ft. Pierce, Florida is an intimate (5 acres) green space in the midst of an overdeveloped area plagued by urban blight. One of the most interesting display gardens at Heathcote is the Japanese garden.

Florida gardeners who wish to create a Japanese garden would do well to visit and take note of the way the plants here are being used.

Inside the Japanese garden is a delightful bonsai collection which includes a 100 year old green buttonwood.

In addition to the Japanese garden, Heathcote has one of the better herb gardens in the state. In addition to the standard bay laurel, I was surprised to see allspice and bay rum trees. I was especially delighted to find a patchouli plant growing there. I couldn't stop myself from rubbing a leaf to get a whiff of that classic fragrance.

Sable palm with 3 heads at Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce, Fl. Another area visitors will not want to miss is the Palm and Cycad Walk.

This area is home to a three-headed sable palm. The sable is Florida's state tree and this particular form is quite rare.

I don't know if this is the only such tree, but I've never seen another like it.

Like most Florida botanic gardens, all the displays at Heathcote are outdoors. Check the weather before you go.

Garden hours are 9-5 Tuesday through Saturday year round. The gardens are also open from 1-5 on Sunday from November to April.

They are closed on Mondays and on major holidays.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $2 for children 6-12. Children under 6 get in free. The gardens are handicap accessible and wheelchairs are available.
