Moss Roses

Portulaca grandiflora

Growing moss roses. How to grow purslane flowers. Portulaca plant winter care. About trailing Portulaca flowers.

Moss roses, mixed colors, single flowers. My neighbors, Tom and Lela are growing these P. grandiflora plants in a container in their back yard.

Portulaca grandiflora is the ornamental, large-flowered purslane. It has a close relative, Portulaca oleracea , which is the edible purslane herb renowned for its high omega-3 content. The large-flowered type should not be ingested as it may be toxic.

Portulaca Plant

This drought tolerant succulent grows to a height of about 12 inches and spreads to twice as wide. The brittle, sometimes trailing stems are round and often turn red in strong sun.

The leaves of some cultivars are paddle shaped and grow to the size of a small paper clip. Others have needle-like gray-green leaves that look a lot like those of the herb rosemary.

Portulaca Flowers

Moss roses, pink singles.

There are double-flowered and single-flowered cultivars in a wide range of colors. The cup shaped singles have five overlapping petals and a darker central eye filled with gold stamens.

The 2 inch doubles resemble miniature roses. This is why they are commonly called moss roses.

Portulaca flowers open in the morning and close when it gets too hot. On overcast days, they may not open at all. They will stay open longer if planted in moist soil.

Rose moss flowers look especially pretty spilling from color bowls or tucked into the nooks and crannies of a rock garden.
