My neighbors, Tom and Lela are growing these P. grandiflora plants in a container in their back yard.

Portulaca grandiflora is the ornamental, large-flowered purslane. It has a close relative, Portulaca oleracea , which is the edible purslane herb renowned for its high omega-3 content. The large-flowered type should not be ingested as it may be toxic.

Portulaca Plant

The leaves of some cultivars are paddle shaped and grow to the size of a small paper clip. Others have needle-like gray-green leaves that look a lot like those of the herb rosemary.

Portulaca Flowers

The 2 inch doubles resemble miniature roses. This is why they are commonly called moss roses.

Portulaca flowers open in the morning and close when it gets too hot. On overcast days, they may not open at all. They will stay open longer if planted in moist soil.

Rose moss flowers look especially pretty spilling from color bowls or tucked into the nooks and crannies of a rock garden.

Growing Moss Rose

Buy Portulaca, Peppermint Hybrid 1 Pkt. (100 seeds)

Portulaca plants are annuals for sun. Plant them 8 inches apart in well draining, sandy soil.

Small seedlings or transplants can be rushed along with regular doses of liquid organic fertilizer.

Deadhead the spent blooms to keep the plants neat and blooming all season long.

If you want to keep them over the winter, grow them in pots and bring them indoors. Keep them as a flowering house plant in a sunny window.

In late spring, scatter the tiny seeds directly onto the ground where you wish the plants to grow. Keep the are moist for 1 month until the plants are up and growing well.

Expect your first blooms 2 months after sowing the seed.
