All the roses described on this page--with the exception of 'Prairie Peace' and 'Love and Peace'--are Meilland roses.

The House of Meilland began, not in 1945 with the introduction of 'Peace', but in 1937 when Francis Meilland introduced his first rose variety, 'Golden State'.

The high-centered gold blossoms were an instant hit. That fall Meilland issued his first color catalog. All the rose-trees sold out in 23 days!

Since then Meilland International has worked tirelessly to develop and introduce more floriferous and durable roses. They are responsible for some of the most popular rose varieties of our time.

'Bonica', 'Carefree Wonder', 'Double Delight' and 'Cherry Parfait' are just a few of the beautiful, lower-maintenance roses Meilland International has offered to the world.

The large, yellow blend flowers for which this 1946 All-America Rose Selection is famous are attractive at every stage of their development from bud to full blown. They appear later in the spring than the blooms of most other Hybrid Tea roses --sometimes as late as early summer.

When the blooms finally arrive they are well worth the wait!

Growing 'Peace' Rose Plants

The rose bushes which support these spectacular flowers are robust growers which will perform under a variety of conditions. But 'Peace' is not a rose for every location. This 5-6 foot beauty needs room to grow and should not be cut back as hard as other varieties in its class.

The bush will occasionally produce a blind shoot.

The Rose Bush Peace gives a brief account of the interesting history of this world famous rose. The following pages will provide you with growing information for the other roses in this group:

'Climbing Peace'

The 'Climbing Peace' rose features the same yellow blend Hybrid Tea flowers as those growing on the shorter 'Peace' rose bush but patience is required to coax the best flower show from this stunning climber.

'Pink Peace' Rose

About growing the intensely fragrant 'Pink Peace' bush and the 'Climbing Pink Peace' hybrid tea rose. This variety produces large, bright pink roses on disease resistant plants.

Rosa 'Chicago Peace'

'Chicago Peace' is a more colorful sport of the world renowned 'Peace' rose (originally Mme A. Meilland) which was discovered in the Windy City and introduced in 1962.

'Desert Peace' Rose

Desert Peace rose.

Rosa Meinomad was introduced by the House of Meilland in 1992.

The upright, thorny shrubs produce 4-5 foot stems lined with dark green, leathery leaves. The Hybrid Tea flowers carry up to 25 yellow petals edged in red and mildly fragrant. Deadheading will increase the number of flowers produced.

'Desert Peace' roses are hardy in USDA zones 5-9.

'Love and Peace' Rose

Love and Peace roses

The same Peace plant with high-centered gold flowers edged pink. The lightly scented blooms appear on new wood starting in late spring or early summer and repeating throughout the growing season.

'Love and Peace' was hybridized by Jerry Twomey and Ping Lim and introduced by Bailey Nurseries in 2001. It is a cross between 'Peace' and an unknown seedling.

The 5 foot shrub is resistant to both black spot and mildew.

'Prairie Peace' Rose

This rose was hybridized by Robert Erskine and named for its flower's likeness to that of the 'Peace' Hybrid Tea rose.

'Prairie Peace' flushes twice a year with peach, yellow and pink blossoms which sometimes possess as many as 50 petals.

Robert Erskine spent his life raising cattle on a farm in Alberta, Canada but plants were his true love. During his free time he endeavored to increase the cold hardiness of roses, apples and lilies.

He discovered 2 unique native roses, Rosa woodsii and Rosa acicularis in his pasture. These became the parents of the roses he would later introduce. 'Prairie Peace' was one of Erskine's best and favorite hybrids.
