My Nun Orchid , little leaves on the flower stock are getting brown,(see photo) is OK?

and I live in Dallas, north side, can they go in the ground?

Plant Guides Answer

Tim, the fact that your Phaius tankervilliae is blooming heavily suggests that the plant is healthy. From what I can see in the photo, the stems look green and healthy as do the larger leaves.

I've noticed that those little leaves (I don't know the technical name for them) turn brown and fall off on my orchids too.

I think they are just living out their natural life cycle. As long as the plant seems o.k. otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Nun orchids are not at all cold hardy. They will only survive outdoors where temperatures remain above freezing all year.

You could plant it outside in USDA zone 10 or 11. I think Dallas is in zone 8.

If I were you, I'd keep it in a pot and bring it in for the winter. I'm sure you don't want to lose such a large, beautiful orchid.
