A sweet potato planting is usually started in the spring from small sweet potato plants called slips.
If all you want is an
ornamental sweet potato vine
, you can start your own sweet potato slips using a mature sweet potato. But, if you want potatoes for the table, it is best to purchase disease-free, nursery-grown slips.
How to Plant Sweet Potatoes
Work some organic compost and high phosphorous, low nitrogen fertilizer (5-10-10) into the soil in the planting area. Then mound the soil up into wide ridges about 10 inches high and 3 feet apart.
Plant the sweet potato slips 3 inches deep into the ridges spacing them a foot apart.
A month after setting the sweet potato plants in, feed them again.
Deep south gardeners may begin a second crop in mid summer by rooting 8 inch sections of the vines. Keep the cuttings moist and they will root quickly.
