I once read that Australian women have used fresh aloe vera gel to protect their skin from the harmful effects of excess sun (and to heal it afterwords) exposure for centuries.Living in Florida where the sun is very strong, I took this as instruction. I always intend to apply this ancient aloe vera skin remedy prior to heading out into the garden. I have the best of intentions but the worst memory imaginable so what usually happens is that I go out, stay out way longer than I planned to and only use the aloe vera gel after having been exposed. Consequently, my skin suffers damage. But the damage is not nearly as bad as it would be if I did not use the aloe vera gel at all. My skin not only looks better but feels better when I use aloe after sun exposure. I should mention that I use the fresh gel from a broken aloe vera leaf. Also, fresh aloe juice or gel can stain fabric so take care not to get it on your clothing.

Aloe vera does 3 thing for your skin:- Protects. When you apply aloe gel to your skin (not once but repeatedly) it forms an invisible bandage. The transparent gel sits on top of the skin, sealing and protecting it from bacteria and abrasion.
The bitter taste of aloe latex(the yellow sap around the clear gel) repels insects. I sometimes use it when gardening to keep the mosquitoes off me. - Soothes. Aloe is mildly analgesic and antiinflamatory. It also feels cool to the touch. This is what makes sunburn aloe vera treatment so effective.
The first thing you want to do with a sunburn is cool the skin. Fresh aloe or a refrigerated aloe vera gel product will work well. The more of it you slather on, the more pain relief you will obtain. Still, you may need to take an OTC pain reliever while the sunburn is fresh. Vitamin E oil is good to apply once the skin cools. It promotes fast healing and prevents scarring. If you've got the vitamin capsules, prick one with a pin and squeeze the oil out. Mix it with the aloe gel and apply it like a lotion. - Heals. Aloe penetrates more layers of epidermis than most other topical skin care preparations. It may carry other things you mix with it deeper into the skin as well.
Aloe gel is astringent and emollient at the same time. It is believed to speed cellular repair though I don't know of any studies that have proven this. I know from my own experience that it prevents scars from forming when applied immediately and repeatedly after a skin injury.
