My Momma's Best Fresh Sweet Potato Pie

My momma's best, fresh sweet potato pie recipe. This homemade sweet potato pie differs from the traditional southern sweet potato pie in that it is not made with canned milk.

My mother used fresh cow's milk in her delicious sweet potato pie recipe. She just did not like the taste of canned milk.

My husband and I are lactose intolerant so I make Mom's recipe for sweet potato pie with orange juice. The flavor of orange juice complements the sweet potatoes and the pie filling is just as tasty as Mom's.

I do not like canned milk either and I think this is the best sweet potato pie I have ever eaten.

Momma's Sweet Potato Pie

This recipe makes enough filling for 2 9 inch pie crusts.

  • 3 medium-sized, fresh sweet potatoes
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2/3 stick of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • Orange juice or milk
  • The juice of 1/4 of a fresh lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Wash, slice and boil the potatoes until they are fork tender. Pour the water off and let the sweet potatoes cool.

    Mix up the sweet potato pie crust using the pie crust recipe over here.

    Peel and mash the potatoes. Add the butter, sugar, lemon juice and spices. Beat the eggs in a measuring cup and add enough orange juice to make 6 ounces. Mix this into the potatoes.

    Roll out the two crusts and pre-bake them for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

    Divide the filling between the 2 crusts and bake the pies until the crust browns. Let them cool thoroughly before you slice them.

    Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream make great toppings for this fall harvest sweet potato pie.
