The weather on Maui is warm year round because of the islands proximity to the equator. The temperature of the ocean around Maui island varies by fewer than 10 degrees (75-83 degrees F.) from winter to summer.
The warmth of the water moderates the atmosphere over the island during the winter. The trade winds (so named by merchant seamen who made use of them to sail to distant lands) cool the island during the heat of summer.
Maui, Hawaii weather changes with the altitude. It is always warmest near the coast. The further upcountry you go, the cooler it will be. Lahaina, Maui weather will always be hotter and drier than the weather in Hana, Maui.
It is always cold at the summit of Haleakala because of the altitude.
Summer weather is also more windy than winter weather on Maui.
Hawaii Maui Weather By Month
January: January weather in Maui is wet. Lahaina will get almost 3.5 inches or rain vs nearly 9.5 inches in Hana. The water averages about 75 degrees F. at this time with large surf on the North and West shores. This is also the most likely month to see snow on top of Haleakala.
Lahaina, Maui weather averages 64-82 degrees F. Upcountry locations will typically be 2-3 degrees cooler.
February: Cool and somewhat rainy. Nearly 2.5 inches of rain falls in Lahaina at this time of year vs almost 7 inches in Hana.
Expect medium to large surf on the North and West shores with 74 degree F. water. Snow falls on Haleakala in some years. Lahaina, Hana, and Kahului temps average 63-80 degrees F.
March: The windward side of the island (Haiku to Hana--9.5 inches of rain) will be windy and rainy. If warm, sunny weather is what you seek, stay in Kihei or Lahaina--less than 2 inches of rain.
The ocean remains 74 degrees and the surf is likely up on the North and West shores.
Lahaina temps average 64-83 degrees F. with upcountry locations 1 or 2 degrees cooler.
April: Showers and clouds on the windward side of the island. Sunny days on the leeward side. Average rainfall in Lahaina: just over 1 inch. Average rainfall in Hana: just under 9 inches.
Lahaina, Maui temps: 65-84 degrees F. Hana and Kahului temps: 2-4 degrees cooler during the day. About the same at night.
May: The weather in Maui becomes summery in May. At least on the leeward side of the island. The windward side is still under the influence of constant tradewinds beside a 76 degree F. ocean.
About the same amount of rain falls in May as in April. Average temperatures are about 2 degrees warmer than the April averages.
June: June weather in Maui is dry. Lahaina will see less than an inch of rain and Hana will receive fewer than 4 inches this month.
The water temperature will rise to 77 degrees F. Lahaina and Kahului temperatures will range from 68-87 degrees F. Hana, Maui weather: 69-83 degrees F.
Hurricane season in Maui begins in June but storms rarely make landfall here during this month.
July: July weather in Maui is hot but the heat is moderated by the tradewinds making it warm and dry. Very little rain will fall in Lahaina this month. Hana will receive more than 5.5 inches.
Daytime Maui, Hawaii weather will hover around 88 degrees F. cooling to as low as 69 degrees at night.
The ocean has slowly warmed to 78 degrees F. with small to medium surf on the South shore.
August: The hottest weather on Maui will arrive in late August and September. All the same, the refreshing tradewinds will keep you from broiling unless a tropical storm blows in.
The water has warmed to 79 degrees F. Watch out for periodic high surf on South Maui beaches.
Expect the same amount of rain as in July with temperatures about a degree warmer.
September: Average temperatures will rise by about 1 degree over last month's with a similar amount of rainfall.
Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii but are most likely to enter the 80 degree Hawaiian waters in September. If a storm passes closely enough it will affect the weather in Maui mainly by raising the humidity to uncomfortable levels.
October: Warm and dry weather. Toward month's end, temperatures will begin to fall from the summer highs but average temps are just 1 degree cooler than September's averages.
Rainfall is beginning to increase. A bit more than 1 inch in Lahaina and a bit more than 7 in Hana.
The 79 degree F. ocean is cooling now. Winter storms can usher in cold fronts at this time.
November: The second half of November will usually see a cold front. Winter storms blowing across the 77 degree F. ocean waters result in large surf on the North and West shores.
Average November temps in Lahaina: 67-86 degrees F. Hana 68-81 degrees. Kahului: 68-84 degrees.
The rainy season begins in November. Expect a bit more than 2 inches of rain to fall in Lahaina and about 8.5 inches around Hana.
December: Winter weather in Maui is characterized by frequent cold fronts, wind, and rain. That said, more than half of December's days have historically been sunny and warm.
Average temperatures in Lahaina, Maui: 65-83 degrees F. with just over 3 inches of precipitation. Hana averages: 66-79 degrees F. will just over 6 inches of precip. Kahului average December temps: 66-81 degrees.
The waters around Maui have cooled to 76 degrees F. with medium to large surf on the North and West shores.
