What Age to Plant Seedling Golden Delicious Apple Tree

I started a Golden Delicious apple tree from seed. The tree is now 2 years old and approx. 2 feet tall.

At what age can I plant this tree in the yard and expect it to live?

I live in south central Illinois.

Plant Guides Answer:

I would wait until the tree is at least 3 feet tall before planting it out.

Because Golden Delicious is more tender than many other apple varieties, I would plant it in the spring. This way the tree will have a full growing season to become established before facing winter's cold.

Whenever you do plant your Golden Delicious seedling, remember to take measures to protect the young tree from rabbits and deer.

They like to eat apple trees and can kill a small tree.
