Ylang Ylang (pronounced e-lang e-lang) means flower of flowers.

Philippine legend has it that the bloom is named after a beautiful young woman, Ilang, whose birth was a result of a deal made between her infertile parents and the gods.

The gods promised to give the couple a little girl on the condition that once she grew up she was never to touch a man.

The couple agreed and Ilang was born.

She grew into a ravishing woman and her parents had to guard her closely to keep her would-be suitors at bay. One day, while the parents were away from the house, Ilang went into the garden to pick a bouquet of flowers.

A young man who had been enamored of her for some time approached her there and declared his love. In his passion, he impulsively took her hand and proposed.

As soon as he touched her, Ilang was instantly transformed into a tree bearing fragrant flowers.

"Ilang! Ilang!" cried the young lover, "My flower of all flowers..."

The legend concludes that the spirit of the young man will wander the garden grounds seeking his beloved Ilang for eternity.
